Biography

Louis Adam is a full professor at Laval University's School of Actuarial Science. He graduated in Actuarial Science from Université Laval in 1981, is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA). A professor since 1993, he was director of the undergraduate actuarial program from 2002 to 2010. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses, mainly in pension plans, pension plan costing and funding, but also in financial mathematics, actuarial mathematics, legislation and the actuary's professional liability.

In addition to his research on the mortality of Canadian retirees, he is also interested in pension plan financing and risk modeling. In the past, he has also been actively involved in the pedagogical application of information technology.

He has been a guest speaker on several occasions on the issue of mortality among Canadian retirees, as well as on other subjects such as conditional indexation measures and the impact of inflation modeling on annuity values. His mortality research contributed to the first-ever mortality table for Canadian retirees published by the CIA in 2014.

In the past, Louis participated in the review of certain aspects of the December 31, 2000 actuarial valuation of the Quebec Pension Plan. His work on mortality attracted the interest of the Chief Actuary of the Quebec Pension Plan, and was acknowledged in the report on the actuarial valuation of this Plan as at December 31, 2015.

From 2009 to 2012, he was a member of the CIA Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Actuarial Foundation of Canada from 2009 to 2016, which in 2016 awarded him the title of Ambassador Emeritus of the Actuarial Foundation of Canada in recognition of his contribution.

In 2010, he was elected President-Elect of the Club des actuaires de Québec. His term as President ended in 2012.

Since 2012, he has been a member of the Retirement Committee of the Pension Plan for Professors of Université Laval, and has chaired this committee since 2022. He has been leading retirement preparation workshops for professors since 2012. He has also been a member of the Pension Plan Committee of the Laval University Teachers' Union since 2011, and has chaired this committee from 2012 to 2024 (with the exception of the 2017-2018 academic year).

He actively participates in the work of SOA and ICA task forces and commissions, notably as Chair of the ICA Communications Commission until 2009. He was a member of the Pension Experience Sub-Committee of the CIA Research Commission until 2014. He was a member of the CIA Task Force on Mortality Improvement.

In 2018, he was awarded the Gold Palm in recognition of volunteer service to the ICA.
